Coca Cola Ad
One of Coca-Cola’s most enduring jingles was also a hit single: “I’d Like to Teach the World
to Sing.” The lyrics were inspired when a creative director for Coke’s ad agency was stranded
overnight in Dublin, Ireland, due to heavy fog over London’s
Heathrow Airport. Passengers were tired and cranky, and not
looking forward to spending the night at Shannon Airport. The
ad exec grabbed a snack at the airport coffee shop and happened
to notice that at nearby tables, passengers who were strangers to
one another (and who had been irate just an hour earlier) were
sitting together and chatting over bottles of Coca-Cola. The line
“I’d like to buy the world a Coke” popped into his head, and the
phrase was expanded into a memorable 1971 ad campaign.
